Update: How to Identify Head Lice

Update: How to Identify Head Lice

how to identify head lice

If you’re a parent, chances are at some point in your child’s life, you’ll have to deal with head lice!

That’s why it’s extremely important that you know how to identify them.

Today, we’re taking you to the “school of lice” and by the time you’re done this 3 minute read … you’ll have the knowledge to help keep your family and home head lice free.

Determining if your child has head lice can be a bit tricky – especially if you’ve never dealt with it before. Many parents have a quick look and see nothing while some mistaken the white fluffy stuff for dry skin, dandruff, DEC plugs, or hair casts.

what are head lice

Head Lice … What Are They?

  • Head lice are small grey or reddish brown bugs (1mm to 4mm).
  • Lice live on the human head only – not on pets or other parts of the body.
  • Lice cannot survive off the head for more than 24 to 48 hours without a blood meal.
  • Lice do not hop, jump or fly.
  • Lice eggs are tear-drop shaped and glued to one side of the hair shaft on an angle.
  • Viable eggs are typically brownish/yellow to caramel in colour – never white.
  • Empty egg cases or dead eggs are called, Nits.
  • Nits are clear, opaque, almost see through.
  • Female lice lay 3 to 5 eggs per day and live for 30 days.
  • Lice eggs take 7 to 10 days to hatch and another 7 to 10 days to mature and mate.
  • An louse egg is called a Nit; a baby louse is called a Nymph.

How To Find Head Lice?

Mature lice are about the size of a sesame seed. They have six legs and do not have wings. They are usually brownish in colour but this can range from a pale sandy colour to yellowy, grey-brown or dark brown.

Lice eggs are not white.  Empty lice eggs may appear to be translucent meaning that they are see-through and this is why they seem to take on the colour of the hair. If you look at a lice egg (not an adult louse) under the microscope, you can actually see if the egg is empty or viable.  If viable, it will be brown not translucent or opaque.

Nymphs or baby lice are just miniature versions of adult lice and are very hard to see because they are so small. Nymphs can appear red in colour and if you see tiny red dots that seem to move, you could be eye to eye with a baby louse.

Do not confuse DEC plugs, hair casts or other hair debris with lice eggs. Remember – if it is white, it’s not a lice egg.

Lice eggs are clearly attached to one side of the hair shaft. DEC plugs and hair casts surround the hair shaft. This dandruff like skin debris also sticks to the hair shaft like a nit but they are white and slide easier.

(Note: If you have confirmed head lice you might want to try our one and done #1 Time Head Lice Solution. It works great for lice and nits!)

What tools do I need?

To look for and identify head lice, you will need a bright light – direct sunlight is best and a magnifying visor (glass.) Having a pocket microscope is also a great help; this way, you can pull out a suspicious item, tape it to white paper and have a look with the microscope to make an accurate diagnosis.

Professionals who screen at schools or other locations will use a lighted magnifying visor and will use lice sticks to look through the hair so that the hair can be separated and any debris can be ‘flicked off’. Lice eggs and nits are glued to the hair and will not move when prodded.

How do I find head lice?

Look in the hot spots – around the ears, at the crown of the head and at the nape of the neck.  Lice lay their eggs close to the scalp but look along the whole hair shaft.

Separate the hair into sections and begin by checking the crown of the head first. Then check the nape of the neck and around the ears. These are popular spots for the initial head lice identification, but lice and their eggs can be anywhere on the human head.

If you find something that you think might be a lice egg or nit, try to remove it with your fingers. If it comes off easily, it’s not likely a lice egg or nit. Lice eggs or nits are cemented on the hair shaft and can only be removed by sliding the nit down the hair shaft between your fingernails or with tweezers

What if I’m not sure?

Before you run to the drugstore for a pesticide consider getting a professional opinion. Your family doctor or health professional may be able to accurately identify head lice or lice eggs. Your local health unit may have a nurse who is experienced in head lice identification and many hairdressers are also good at head lice detection.

Your friends and family might be a great resource as well, especially if they’ve experienced head lice themselves.

A professional service like Lice Squad.com can also help. Specially trained consultants are the experts in identifying head lice and you will be assured of an accurate diagnosis. Some metropolitan areas have clinics where you and your family can be screened for lice.

Still unsure if you’re dealing with head lice? We offer free head lice identification. Please contact us at 1-888-542-3778 for more details or visit our head lice identification page.

The itcheness and feeling of something moving in my head \neck\ears comes and goes though.. It looks like I’ve seen something brown moving in my head but I’m not absolutely sure or if I’m just paranoid! I would appreciate so type of confirmation for my sanity!

I had sunday but only one day is it head lice or ,something else?

  • Tina Haddow CSR says:

    Hello Jordan,
Thank you for your inquiry. If what your had in your hair was white like paper or snow, it is not a lice egg. The lice egg is clearly attached to one side of the hair shaft. The DEC plug and hair cast surrounds the hair shaft. This dandruff like skin debris also sticks to the hair shaft like a nit but the difference is they are white and they slide easier. Thank you so much for describing hair casts! I just had a terrifying ten minutes of paranoia while I pulled a number of them from my daughter’s hair. I had lice as a kid, so I knew these didn’t exactly look like nits, but I didn’t know what else it might be since they did stick to the hair shaft (though they slid off easily). I feel so much better now, whew!

Hello Mary we are pleased that Lice Squad.com was able to ease your mind.

  • Anne says:

I have white specks that come off easily and are close to my scalp. I also have some pink bumps from itching. Is it just dandruff?

  • Tina Haddow CSR says:

    Hello Anne,

Thank you for your comment. Yes it is dandruff or dry scalp as louse eggs/nits stick onto the hair shaft on an angle and are not easily removed. They are tear-drop shaped and typically brownish/yellow or caramel coloured.

  • Zoe says:

I found a SINGLE bug in my hair. Big enough for me to see it in the mirror and grab it myself. No other bugs or eggs. Just the single bug. I checked others in my home, no one had anything. I still plan to wash all bedding on high heat and treat it but is it possible to have a SINGLE bug and nothing come from it if found fast? It has only been a day since the only other place I could have gotten the bug. No itching either.

  • Tina Haddow CSR says:

    Hi,
I had a pretty heavy case of lice that was positively diagnosed by someone who used to work for Lice Squad. For about two months now, I’ve been doing treatments with your shampoo and a conditioner every four days. I haven’t found any adult lice in a couple of weeks now, but every now and then I’ll find a strand of hair that has what appears to be a nit on it. The potential nits aren’t near my scalp, though, and are always at least three or four inches down my hair shaft. Is it possible these are just old nits that didn’t come out in the combings? Am I correct in assuming that, if I had an active case, I would be finding adult lice in my combings? I still have some of the shampoo leftover and plan on finishing up the bottle to be safe anyway.

  • Aspen says:

My head has been itchy for the past month or so. I’ve been checked multiple times for lice (but only by my mother, who could be missing things because my hair is very long) but came back negative each time. It’s not worse at night than during the day, but it is itchy in all the spots that lice usually is (behind the ears, at the back of my head, on my neck, the tops of my ears) and one day I was brushing my hair out in my bed, and I looked down and spotted a red bug that looked suspiciously like a lice bug on my bed. It was VERY hard to kill. I have not yet told my mother, tomorrow, I’m going to get her to check my head again and if she does not find anything I am going to go to my family doctor to get checked, because I am almost positive I have lice. Any other advice, especially advice for people with lice that have long hair? Thanks.

Natural herbs have cured so many illness that drugs and injection cant cure. I’ve seen the great importance of natural herbs and the wonderful work they have done in people’s lives. i read people’s testimonies online on how they were cured of herpes, HIV, diabetics etc by Dr Odigie herbal medicine, so i decided to contact the doctor because i know nature has the power to heal anything. I was diagnosed with HIV for the past 7 years but Dr Odigie cured me with his herbs and i referred my aunt and her husband to him immediately because they were both suffering from herpes but to God be the glory, they were cured too .I know is hard to believe but am a living testimony. I found a single brown bug in my hair about 20 minutes ago. I quickly searched the internet to see if it was lice. I have a feeling it is, but my sister checked my scalp thoroughly and claimed she did not see any lice or nits in my hair. She said she had found the same bug in her hair two weeks ago. She also said that her head had been itching in the same areas as mine (the crown of the head). I’m not sure if it’s just because I’m paranoid now, but my head is starting to itch all over. The bug was quite easy to kill, but it looks very similar to lice. I’m planning on showing my mother tomorrow and asking to visit the doctor because I am quite worried. The last thing I want/need is head lice.

I understand if you do not want to specify but could you tell us what you had? We just got done with the lice or so I thought. We even shaved our heads and we keep on finding black specks on a scalps, necks, backs and behind our ears but no bugs. And we still itch

  • Tina Haddow CSR says:

    Hello Ashley,
Did you purchase an over the counter treatment? If so, lice have evolved and as a result the over the counter treatments may be effective in smothering lice but not the eggs, and the eggs are what keep re-hatching every 7-10 days. Nymphs are the first stage of lice who need a blood feed, hence the red marks on the hot spots – behind the ears, nape of the neck, crown of the head and bangs. All of our products are eco-friendly and are effective on eradicating both lice and eggs.
We have licesquad.com locations all over Canada and would suggest that you arrange an appointment for the whole family to be checked by one our professionals. You can book an appointment online at http://www.licesquad.com or call our office at 1-888-542-3778 between the hours of 9-5 Eastern Time Monday through Friday and we will be happy to find your nearest location.
There are alot of myths about lice, and shaving heads does not eradicate them as they need a blood source to survive. Our website provides a wealth of information and also contains all of our eco-friendly products which you can order online also.

Shortly after pulling it out, my head started itching and I felt something wet on my scalp but, again, couldn’t identify what it was.

Thanks for pointing out how lice eggs are translucent. That makes lice really hard to find, in my opinion. Then no itch so i used a repellent and found that i still had an itch, repellent was bad they said was garlic based. So i used nix and the itch was gone for a week or two then came back but after the wash i saw specks. Is this lice i am confused??

    Good Morning Ashley,
Unfortunately lice have been around since Egyptian times and have developed immunity to over the counter lice products like Nix. All our Lice Squad products are plant based, eco-friendly safe and effective and we have highly trained consultants to remove nits (lice eggs) and lice. Nits are hard to see with the naked eye, but are tear drop shaped and attach to one side of the hair strand like glue and cannot be easily removed. The nits will hatch within 7 to 10 days if not removed and nymphs need a blood feast to survive grow and multiply. The nymphs gravitate to the ‘hot spots’ which are behind the ears, nape of the neck, crown and bangs and small red blood spots will appear in those areas and are itchy. We would suggest you make an appointment with Lice Squad for a head check and lice removal, we have locations all over Canada. You can find your nearest location by going onto our website at http://www.licesquad.com and entering your postal code, your nearest Lice Squad location will populate with the phone number to call.
    Best regards,
    Tina
