When I started my head lice removal business over two decades ago, the marketplace offered virtually nothing for families and organizations dealing with this common human condition. I saw a critical problem that needed a solution. One I had experienced firsthand as both a child and a mother. As a high school dropout with no formal business education, I took a bold step forward and set out to change that.
Through determination, resilience, and a willingness to learn, I began building what would become Canada’s largest head lice removal and family hair care brand. Today, our award-winning Canadian franchise system has helped more than two million people become lice-free safely, effectively, and without harmful pesticides.
Education Through Execution
I believe education is the key to success, but it comes in many forms. Without access to higher education, I sought knowledge through experience and immersion rather than a classroom.
For seven years, I volunteered with the Canadian Franchise Association (CFA), serving on its Board of Directors and several key committees, including Convention, Marketing, Women in Franchising, and Advocacy. While learning how to become a successful franchisor, I embraced every opportunity to participate in panel discussions, advocacy initiatives, franchise shows, seminars, podcasts, promotional campaigns, and national conventions. I surrounded myself with mentors who were the best in the business and eventually all of that hands-on, real world experience became my MBA in franchising. It provided the practical blueprint I needed to transform one successful business into a scalable national franchise system.
The “Business in a Box” Blueprint
Franchising is fundamentally about duplication and consistency. To scale successfully, I had to teach others how to replicate our model in their own communities and I needed to become a mentor who could lead franchisees to success.
That required building five essential foundations:
Together, these elements formed a true “business in a box.”
Today, Lice Squad.com and Superhero Kids Hair with Care provide comprehensive onboarding and ongoing education. Every franchisee participates in a structured six-week onboarding training program covering our mission, vision, culture, operational systems, and hands on customer experience.
Beyond startup training, we provide documented procedures, practical coaching, mentorship, and continuous operational support. Our operations manual remains a living document, constantly evolving through feedback from our front-line teams across Canada.
A Culture of Care and Diversity
The franchise system is built on a people-first culture where service is our foundation. That philosophy extends to everyone connected to our organization—including clients, franchisees, employees, consultants, vendors, and community partners.
My team strives to ensure every interaction leaves people feeling supported, respected, and genuinely cared for. Our goal isn’t simply to remove head lice; it’s to transform an overwhelming and emotional experience into one of relief, dignity, and peace of mind.
As a woman-owned Canadian business, I proudly champion diversity and inclusion. The vocation naturally attracts women entrepreneurs from many different backgrounds, including newcomers to Canada pursuing their entrepreneurial dreams.
The brand is recognized for supporting children with autism and other neurodiverse needs by providing specialized haircuts, compassionate service, and sensory-aware and informed lice removal experiences.
Expanding the Mission
Although the company began strictly as a head lice removal service, I quickly realized the opportunity extended far beyond solving one problem.
Today, the mission is to become the premier family hair care brand, delivering personalized solutions that celebrate every family.
Recognizing that one in four children now lives with autism or another form of neurodiversity, I expanded the services to include specialized haircuts, safer products, and trauma-informed lice removal experiences.
The broader vision is simple: eliminate the stigma surrounding head lice while promoting safer, pesticide-free solutions for both people and the planet.
As a franchisor, I believe corporate social responsibility should be demonstrated through action rather than words. Through our Community Superhero Fund initiative, the company will help subsidize treatment for families facing financial hardship, donate products to shelters, partner with charitable organizations, and incorporate community giving directly into our grand openings and promotional events.
The Next 25 Years: Our purpose is not separate from our growth strategy—it is our growth strategy
As the organization enters its next chapter, I continue investing in the systems, technology, and people that will support sustainable long-term growth.
Recent initiatives include:
- Advanced CRM systems to simplify day-to-day franchise operations.
- Artificial Intelligence integration, including upgraded communications and after-hours customer support.
- Enhanced digital marketing through SEO optimization and AI-powered marketing strategies.
-
Community Superhero Fund, the Lice-Free Fridays initiative, combines company contributions with community donations to help families who otherwise could not afford professional care.
I believe no child should experience the stigma of head lice or be forced to rely on harsh chemical or pesticide treatments simply because quality care is financially out of reach. Removing barriers to access, extends our mission beyond just helping families who can afford the services. For me, this represents something much bigger than corporate social responsibility.
Over the years, I’ve learned that the strongest businesses aren’t built by pursuing growth alone. Sustainable growth is achieved when purpose comes first. When an organization genuinely improves lives, supports its communities, and stays true to its values, trust grows, relationships deepen, and business success naturally follows. The companies purpose is not separate from our growth strategy—it is our growth strategy.
Looking ahead, I plan to accelerate expansion through master and area developers while entering new domestic and international markets. I will continue converting select corporate locations into franchise opportunities, welcoming new franchise partners, and investing in executive leadership to strengthen the organization as it continues to grow.
Twenty-five years after opening the first location, my passion for innovation and identifying new opportunities remains as strong as ever.
I am incredibly proud of what my team has built together, and I look forward to continuing our mission of providing peace of mind to families across Canada—and, ultimately, around the world.
