If you knew there was a safer alternative you would almost always choose it.
This is why it is so important to me that we let parents know about our all-natural non-pesticidal alternative for head lice removal. Smothering with essential oils is as effective as smothering with pesticide - and so much safer.
As the Cancer Awareness Coaltion states:
No one can assure your safety when using pesticides. Most pesticides are associated with some risk to human health or the environment.

So why do we take the risk? Short answer - because we are not aware of the alternatives, because misinformation tells us there are no alternatives, because many pharmacies don't stock safer alternatives.
